At the end of each academic year, St. Çï¿ûÊÓƵ recognizes one faculty member and one staff member for their outstanding contributions to the university and the greater Quad Cities community. This year's award-winners are Sarah Eikleberry, PhD, and Caitlin O'Brien.
Sarah Eikleberry, PhD - 2024 Whalen-Fitzgibbon Award-Winner for Outstanding Innovative Teaching
Eikleberry, winner of the 2024 Whalen-Fitzgibbon Award for Outstanding Innovative Teaching, is an associate professor in the Kinesiology Department. In her 11 years at St. Ambrose, Eikleberry has integrated SAU's core values of courage, wisdom, service, and justice, into her educational practices. She explores subjects that span the intersections of sports, gender, and race, in accessible and engaging classroom experiences.
"Her pioneering use of new technologies to explore the historical and ongoing impacts of redlining illustrates her commitment not only to education but to instilling a conscientious understanding of social justice issues among her students," said Amy Novak, EdD, president of St. Çï¿ûÊÓƵ, as she presented Eikleberry the award.
"Through projects that reveal the local effects of historical policies, she provides students with a tangible connection to systemic social issues, bridging past and present in compelling and educational ways."
Ekileberry further cultivates her students' critical thinking and public discourse skills by encouraging them to engage publicly and thoughtfully with issues surrounding women in sports.
Her leadership extends beyond the classroom. Ekileberry is the advisor for the student club PRISM-Promoting Respect in Sexual Minorities, serves in demanding roles within faculty governance, and has contributed to significant legislative changes in Davenport. Her efforts have not only supported and protected LGBTQ+ rights but have also fostered a more inclusive and just community both within and outside the university walls.
"Dr. Sarah Eikleberry's work exemplifies what it means to be an educator committed to both excellence in teaching and the betterment of society," Novak said. "We celebrate her profound impact on her students and her community, affirming her role as a beacon of courage, wisdom, justice, and service at St. Çï¿ûÊÓƵ."
Caitlin O'Brien - 2024 Presidential Award-Winner for Staff Excellence
O'Brien, winner of the 2024 Presidential Award for Staff Excellence, is the athletic coordinator for administration, travel, and special events. From her first days at St. Ambrose, O'Brien has proven to be an indispensable part of the SAU community. She manages complex tasks such as coordinating transportation logistics that have significantly reduced costs for SAU Athletics. She oversees the Athletic Department's work-study students and genuinely cares about the well-being of student-athletes.
"After the loss of a student's father, Caitlin, even while on maternity leave, made concerted efforts to ensure the student felt valued and supported, exemplifying her deep commitment to student welfare," Novak said.
Additionally, O'Brien has proven herself a leader. She stepped up to ensure the continuation of the annual Fighting Bee Golf Classic during her early maternity leave, demonstrating her ability to manage crises with grace and efficiency.
"Caitlin O'Brien is not just a staff member at St. Ambrose but a cornerstone of our community. It is with great pride and gratitude that we honor her with this award, celebrating a leader who not only supports but elevates our university in countless ways," Novak said.
